Aquarius comes off as moody and angry most of time and often threatens hurt Lucy if she does something that annoys or angers her. While other Celestial Spirits serve Lucy obediently, Aquarius is irritated by her. When summoned, Aquarius will either attack the opponent, Lucy, or both of them, depending on her mood.
Regardless of this she does care about Lucy and was saddened when she let her shatter her key to summon the Celestial Spirit King and was happy once her key and had be given Lucy again.
She is also quite loving to her boyfriend Scorpio the Scorpion to whom she shows a completely different side of herself. Additionally, she threatens Lucy to keep quiet about her moodiness in front of Scorpio, lest Lucy become a "drowned corpse."

400 years ago Aquaruis key was owned by Anna Heartfillia, who her key along with other Zodiac Keys to open the Eclipse Gate
Around 400 years later her key came into the hands of Layla Heartfillia who she got along with.
However when she retired as a wizard due to health issues she gave Aquarius's key to her servant Grammi with instructions to give it to her daughter Lucy Heartfillia if she chose to a celestial wizard. During this Grammi moved to the Alvarez Empire. She would frequently summon her to play with her daughter Brandish.
Not long after per Layla's wishes after her death. Her key was eventually given to her daughter Lucy Heartfillia and ot was first key Lucy received. Because there weren't any other children to play with, Lucy would summon Aquarius as a playmate. This greatly infuriated Aquarius, however, learning why Lucy summoned her, the Celestial Spirit couldn't help but feel bad for the girl.

Even among the Zodiac spirits Aquarius is very strong. Her mastery of water magic has aloud to even of multiple opponents such master water users like Juvia Lockser or even the multiple demons of Tartoros. As such Lucy considers the latter one of her strongest spirits on par with Leo the Lion possibly stronger.
